Someone asked us yesterday about the why… of Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen.
It got us thinking, sure we opened the restaurant as part of a life change, giving up our corporate careers, focusing on our relationship and living a life we love. We don’t want to be millionaires as a result we just need to make enough profit to live that life (fingers crossed that happens someday) and make a difference to things and causes we believe in.
Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen is also huge tribute to Nan and Pa (Anne and Peter Kerr) Matty’s grandparents who are such important figures in the family. Nan and Pa, both still very much with us will celebrate their 80th and 85th birthdays with us in July and the restaurant will be taken over by family and friends for the day – so exciting to have created the space for this
The restaurant is also designed to be a social hub in the Hunter Valley; a tourist information for organics and safe place for the LGBTI community. As such we are constantly looking for ways to hero the organic producers in the Hunter and offer our support to the LGBTI community.
As part of our social enterprise activities this week we are hosting a lunch for locals in need or having a hard time and on Sunday and Monday we have fundraisers for St Vincent’s CEO Sleepout. Tomorrow night Matty and Jimmy sleep out in Newcastle along with more than 50 other business leaders to raise money for the 105,000 Australians currently experiencing homelessness.
We need to acknowledge Hunter Valley Cheese Company, Morpeth Butchery, Little Hill Farm Chickens, Organic Feast, Bread Basket and Gloria and Rob at Farmer’s Table who grow all our organic leaves – our gorgeous and like minded suppliers who have donated all the food to make this week happen. The business that owns the restaurant is also a founding partner and organiser of Pokolbin Pride, the Hunter’s first LGBTI festival scheduled for October 2016. We are really happy with the way this is beginning to unfold too.
